2024 Civic Type R Review

The 2024 Civic Type R (FL5) refines the 11th-generation hot hatch with more power and subtle styling tweaks. Honda’s turbocharged 2.0-litre K20C1 engine produces 315 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, paired to a slick six-speed manual gearbox. TopSpeed notes that the FL5 is “one of the best hot hatchbacks currently on sale” thanks to mature on-road manners and legendary Honda reliability. The FL5 is slightly longer and wider than the FK8 but trades some of its boy-racer styling for a more grown-up appearance, retaining a large rear wing and triple-exit exhaust.

Aerodynamics and chassis tuning were overhauled. Honda claims the revised rear wing, underbody venturi and front splitter generate about 100 kg more downforce at 124 mph. The suspension features dual-axis front struts to tame torque steer, adaptive dampers and a limited-slip differential. Inside, the FL5 gets lower-mounted red bucket seats that hold the driver securely and improve sight lines. A 9-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, dual-zone climate control and a 12-speaker Bose stereo bring modern convenience.

While the new Type R is more refined, there are compromises. Rear visibility is still limited by the large wing, and the price has risen to around $44,795 plus premiums for colours like Boost Blue and Championship White. Yet the balanced chassis, communicative steering and improved build quality ensure the FL5 remains the benchmark among front-drive performance cars
